a record or diary of my thoughts and experiences in this new phase of life. Join me on my physical and mental journey to see what is out there beyond the hamster wheel. I hope to navigate through, over and around the norm, away from the well trodden path, aside the tourist trap...........

Beach day
I had a very good nights sleep and woke early .......just early enough to see the sunrise from my window!
How lucky!!
I needed to check out today so I left my bag and had a wonder down the coast road to find a beach.
I have noticed that Indonesians don't really like to walk anywhere, neither in the cities or out here. Only the poor people & workers walk so I bet they think I'm strange.
Walked through some little villages where people were farming, gardening and getting coconuts from the trees.
Notice how good the road is above! ....for shame WODC ....OK , they don't get frosts here but even so, for a small village in a third world country there are no pot holes.
This lady let me take her photo:
I think this building must have been damaged in an earthquake.
I came across this alarming sign....the opposite to the volcano one!
There were a few places on the way and land up for sale......I can imagine this place getting slowly more developed like Bali
Bargain wedding in Lombok anyone?
What was sad to see was so much rubbish dumped particularly at the sides of the road
The first beach I went to was called Pandanan beach
You can see the Gili islands in the distance
I bought a coconut. The water was refreshing and you could scoop out the coconut pulp....it was kind of slimy
On the way back to the hotel I found another beach where I sat for longer and read my book and went in the sea. The sea was warm and it was a little windy, but a warm wind too.
I was watching this guy who was collecting worms.....as bait for fishing I guess......
He would sprinkle grit over the sand and watch and wait then grab at the sand and then he would gently and slowly pull the worm, so as not to break it, then pop it in his bucket.
I have noticed the cricket and insect sounds are so loud out here, and sometimes the sound comes in waves so that suddenly it becomes really loud!
Later I went to the hostel I booked for 3 nights. It's a really cool place run by Heri - an Indonesian guy - he grows veg there and has chickens, ducks, fish and lots of cats!! - I think Indonesians really like cats.
My room is great, and despite being a hostel of only nine rooms they are all separate.
The guy who works there, Augus, cooks the food. I had some vegetables and chicken in a soupy broth, with rice called capcay. It was really tasty.
I was there alone at first but then two Swiss girls arrived which was cool as the only reason to go to a hostel was to meet other people.
