Into my last few days in Japan & I am finding it both weird & wonderful.
From the most complicated toilets I've ever seen - I learnt the waterfall sounds are there to hide any 'bathroom' sounds you might make and hence stop any embarrassment - that kind of sums it up I suppose.
I feel its important for there to be a calm polite face on the world. Not to make a fuss.
And things sometimes seem a little childlike, not so much 'dummed down' but perhaps dressed up........its hard to explain & obviously I can only comment on what I feel - I haven't been here at all long enough to have a say - just funny little cartoon figures on signs, cute jingles & 'lift music' all over the place - sometimes in parks.
'Be yourself, even under the sun.'
........I don't know if I've said before but most Asian suncream has a kind of bleaching agent in it.
Its crazy isnt it, that they want to look whiter & we want to look browner.
I've seen dogs dressed up in full on outfits & the other day, a collie with a tiny cowboy hat......I wish I'd got a photo, it was so funny.

There does seem to be an obsession with germs & cleanliness - not just the removal of shoes - that's common all over Asia - but in many other areas, although, strangely, most toilets have nowhere or nothing to dry your hands with. I don't know if this is an environmental thing or for cleanliness again - perhaps naturally drying your hands is better? Who knows.
Ha ha - back to loos again - 🤣 my favourite topic!
There is definitely a slight futuristic feel - the bullet train is particularly impressive - I've been on two now & it's amazing, efficient & fast - better than flying.
And I don't know why it tickles me that the Japanese for card (as in a credit card) is 'cardo'.
I haven't had a lot of time or energy to delve much into Japan's history but here is the Wikipedia version.
