Picnic at Hanging Rock

When I was a child I watched a film called Picnic at hanging rock. It is an Australian film made in 1975 from a book written by Joan Lindsay, a novelist from St Kilda, Melbourne.....which is where I'm staying.

Without spoiling it too much.....the film is set in 1900 on Valentines day. A party of school girls go for a picnic up at a place called hanging rock & strange events occur.

In the film the character Miranda is likened to a 'Botticelli angel'

I was absolutely fascinated by the film as a child and so, being In Victoria, where the rock is, I could not resist a visit.

You could say - I was drawn there - if we were being mysterious

The link below gives some background to the story & SPOILER ALERT - If you do want to see the film first

The rock itself is volcanic and formed from lava pushed up over 6 million years ago. Its unique formation is from weathering of the rocks into dramatic columns.

I got a train out to Woodend but had to get a taxi to the rock itself as there was no public transport.

It was worth it as the place was amazing, and on climbing to the top (a path nowadays of course) you are then amongst a labyrinth of the rocks themselves. Its honestly like a maze of tall columns and tunnels that you can almost get lost in.

They are so beautiful and enchanting & I really did have a strange sense of peace among them & a feeling that I could be there forever and that I didn't want to leave.

This is why it was named hanging rock - a huge bolder bridging across the others

I don't know if a banana & two cookies count as a picnic, but I ate up on the rock & was trying to work out which place the girls walk through in the film.

The other film I kept thinking about was 127 hours.....

The Aboriginal people would not climb the rock. They said there were evil spirits up there - they inhabited the area for 20,000 years before the European settlers

Some people were saying there was a Koala in a tree up there but I couldn't see it.

I did see lots of beautiful coloured birds like the Crimson Rosella, just flying about

and I was lucky enough to see an Echidna

a kind of smaller version of a porcupine.....he was trying to hide from me! They look like this:

It was a really good day
